Ring Shots! Are they a lost art?!

Photographing heirlooms during a wedding day!

I am always asked, by other photographers, "You still take ring shots, WHY?" My answer, "WHY NOT?!"
I once asked a photographer, while second shooting for them, if they wanted me to get set up for them to take the ring shots, he replied arrogantly, "I don't take rings shots anymore, its old school." I was kinda stumped and thought, wow, what a great opportunity missed!
I guess we all approach a wedding day differently and decide what images are important to spend time on. My approach, why rule out a wedding ring shot?! If I have time, it IS an image that I love to create!
I think that photographers get so caught up in the "Trends," which are important, but we forget about the "Classic Trends" as well.
Ring Shots ARE NOT a lost art, but they are an amazing way to show your creativity!

Photographing the wedding rings has always been one of my favorite parts of a wedding day!
With all that comes in a busy wedding day, photographing the wedding rings is my chance to be creative and create a beautiful image for my clients.
I look around for special decorations that the couple may have made or something to relate to the theme of the wedding, if there is one, to use in my images.
I always ask my clients during their 30 day consult if they mind taking their rings off on the wedding day for a ring shot so that they are not surprised on the day of.

The most important necessity is a macro lens.
A macro lens is a must-have lens for wedding photographers because photographing small details like the rings requires a macro lens.  I use the AF-Micro-Nikkor 60mm f2.8 which is the perfect lens for me when I need to shoot the details of small objects like the rings.  This lens allows me to photograph the details of even the tiniest of diamonds with beautiful clarity and shine.  I simply wouldn't be able to do this with any other lens.
The second most important necessity is light.
Many photographers use speed lights or Ice Lights or something similar when photographing details. I have used these things but have found that I typically prefer to use a very simple LED light that I bought from Doug Gordon. These LED lights have been the perfect addition to my ring shots and have helped me create MANY ring shots!

Let talk settings.
I prefer to shoot at approximately f5.6/f.8. for me, because it is closed down enough to ensure that all parts of both rings are in complete focus, but still wide enough to allow a bit of fall off, love the beautiful bokeh, and blurred out backgrounds.
I do know of some photographers who will shoot wide open during ring shots (or close to it), however, I feel its important to have at least one shot with both rings completely in focus to give your client a variety of images to choose from.

One of my passions as a photographer is to help others with what I have learned. I know growing in this field can be intimidating and you can feel less than sometimes, but I know how far I have come and I know if I can become a better photographer ANYONE can!
I know that asking for help can be tough as well, thats why when I mentor other photographers I meet them where they are. No judgement about what they don't know, but the focus is more on "What do you want to know?"
